Season finale!! In the Saloon & At the Barbershop
Sunday, April 26, 2009
On Saturday, May 9th at 7:30 pm, The LuCille Tack Center will present "In the Saloon & At the Barbershop" featuring local talents of the Northern Gateway Chorus directed by Kevin Morrissey, and pianist Dr. Steve Standiford in an evening of four-part barbershop and ragtime piano music. This will be a concert full of two lighthearted and lively styles of uniquely American music.
The Northern Gateway Chorus is a 60-member barbershop chorus based in Stevens Point. The members are all from the Central Wisconsin area, and they perform at local events and statewide competitions. According to their website, The Northern Gateway Chorus is the Barbershop chorus of the Stevens Point, WI chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. The Society is an international organization, arranged in 16 districts across the U.S. and Canada.
So what exactly is Barbershop and how is it different from other types of singing groups? Barbershop is traditionally a capella which means there is no accompaniment from instruments. This four-part chorus also differs from other choral music in that harmonies are much tighter, and the notes are much closer on the scale. One thing is for sure... this group will leave you wanting more! Information about the group and history of Barbershop style music can be found on their website stevenspointbarbershoppers.com
Ragtime is another American music style that is truly infectious! It became popular in the early 1900's and has been delighting audiences of all ages ever since.
Dr. Steve Standiford is a Central Wisconsin native, accomplished surgeon, and ragtime pianist extraordinaire. He has performed at ragtime concerts and festivals across the country, including the notable Scott Joplin Festival in Sedalia, MO. His polished performance of tried and true old favorites and captivating sparkling new tunes will dazzle and delight your ears, have you toe-tapping in the seats and itching to get up and dance.
Tickets for this unforgettable show are $10 and can be purchased in advance or at the door the evening of the show. The Tack Center Box Office, 300 School Street in Spencer is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 10am until 4pm. You may phone 715-659-4499 to charge tickets with your VISA, Mastercard or Discover. Tickets are also available on the web at www.lucilletackcenter.com
